Earlier this summer, the Athletic Department announced the hiring of Carter Shaw as the new Women’s Basketball head coach. After its most successful conference performance since 2011-2012, Gordon Women’s Basketball now has long-term leadership that they hope can take the program to new heights.

Shaw, a graduate of the University of Utah, has spent time as an assistant at a number of Division 1 colleges, including UC Riverside, Colgate, Ball State, Colorado State, and his alma mater. Before taking the job at Gordon, Shaw was the women’s head coach at Cal State Los Angeles.

When asked about his thoughts on the new opportunity, Shaw said, “I am eager to partner with those in the athletic department and in student life and I welcome the challenge of integrating faith, learning, and student development while building the women’s basketball program.”

After a number of difficult seasons, women’s basketball has been on the upswing over the past several years. For instance, last season’s team finished just short of a berth in the conference tournament – a tournament they have not reached since the 2004-2005 season. Furthermore, the team roster is brimming with young and returning talent. On last season’s roster of 17 players, 16 were underclassmen, 11 of whom were first-years. Last year’s top five scorers are all returning.

Shaw joins a program that has struggled in the past, but is certainly looking up. With a strong commitment to Gordon and his players, and a clear sense of direction for the future of the program, Shaw could be the missing piece that will take Women’s Basketball into CCC contention.
